Master Black Belt Certification: General Overview and Process

The Master Black Belt Certification (CMBB) is a Six Sigma certification given to people who were trained thoroughly to acquire a great deal of proficiency of the practices of a certain industry inclined on the concept of Six Sigma. This certification was offered by the American Society for Quality in 2010.

Excellent leadership skills, innovativeness, and a display of strong dedication to the practices of a certain industry, as well as advanced capabilities to quality and improvement are the qualitative traits of a master black belt. Just like any belts in the organization, master black belts have certain requirements, all according to the American Society for Quality or ASQ.

A person who currently has a Six Sigma certification of a Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) is qualified to apply for a CMBB. He should have at least five (5) years of experience as a certified Six Sigma Black Belt or Master Black Belt, or has completed ten (10) Six Sigma Black Belt Projects.

If the person has been qualified by having either one of these qualifications, his portfolio of work is to be provided for fellow MBBs to review on. It should show his particular work as a SSBB or MBB, such as teaching, coaching, and mentoring; occupational experience & responsibility; technical experience, and motivation. The review is conducted by other MBBs, but is under the supervision of ASQ.

After the all of the portfolio’s aforementioned particular works of the CMBB candidate has been approved by the panel of other MBBs, he can then take the examination after receiving an approval letter from the members of the panel.

The last process of the Six Sigma certification process is the examination. It is a written type of exam comprising multiple-choice inquiries in which it is used to determine the person’s grasp of the Body of Knowledge. It is a five-hour exam that is administered in English, and is an open-book exam.
