What are DMAIC and DMADV in Six Sigma Certification?
The Six Sigma Black Belt is someone responsible for the successful implementation of the projects with the use of certain Six Sigma methodologies. A black belt is given a six sigma certification if they are knowledgeable with the DMAIC and the DMADV (or DFSS), two specific methodologies that is endemic to the whole Six Sigma idea.
What is DMAIC? Developed by W. Edwards Deming, this type of methodology has been useful in projects that seek to improve a certain business process. DMAIC involves five steps that represent this aim. These are Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. This knowledge of DMAIC is part of the six sigma certification for the black belt.
Defining the specific problem, the customer’s wants and needs, and the project’s specific aims is the first step. Devising accurate measurements and collecting necessary data is the second step. Analyzing various data and their cause-and-effect relationships is the third step.
The fourth step is improving and/or optimizing the processes based on the analysis and measurements. The last step is controlling whatever’s been improved and maintaining what has been corrected to ensure a smooth flow of business.
