The Six Sigma Certification Hierarchy: What are the Rankings?

The Six Sigma has been known for innovating the “professionalizing” of the functions on the quality management realm. Before the birth of the concept, practicing quality management was only done on the production floor. Statisticians take on their work at a separate room.

In the world of Six Sigma, there are several levels or rankings of professional employees, each designated with a specific kind of job. Some are given the six sigma certification. They take on different levels of training and apply what they learned in training in accordance to their designated role of their level through project implementation.

The Six Sigma organizational hierarchy starts with the leadership team. The first person in the leadership team is the sponsor. He is the one selecting the projects. The leader is the one responsible for the success of implementing the project. The champion is in the middle of the ranking, and is the most mobile of the leadership team who oversees those who were given the six sigma certification.

Those who are designated with “martial arts belts” are the ones who implement the project. The first is the master black belt. He is the Six Sigma matter expert. He trains and mentors those lower than him and he communicates with the leader and the champion in project monitoring. The next two belts are the ones given the six sigma certification.

The second is the black belt. They are the ones responsible to the implementation of all the projects in all of the organizations. They are the ones who give life to a certain Six Sigma project, and provide instructions and guide the lower belt, which is the green belt.

The third, the green belt, is the most mobile of all the belts. They function according to the guidelines of the project, and are trained with the necessary Six Sigma tools. They usually take part on smaller projects which are part of a bigger project that the black belts oversee.
